Enterprise Backups for Dedicated Servers

If you haven’t received information on the Enterprise Level Backups at FastServers.Net I thought I would take some time to cover in detail the features and benefits associated with them.

Prior to our partnership with a leading backup provider (Arsenal Digital), FastServers.Net provided a NAS based backup solution. This solution required clients to push backups via FTP to a NAS device located on our network. As we grew and populated our network with larger solutions these types of backups no longer met our needs or the needs of the clients.

In January of 2006 we partnered with a leading backup provider Arsenal Digital and provisioned onsite storage devices, software, and management of our backups. Arsenal Digital is one of the premier providers and primarily target larger data centers and telecom’s. The offering they brought to the table was the viaRemote and viaRecovery(another future post) based backups.

viaRemote which is the file based backup system offers true 7, 14, and 28 day backups. This gives you the client the ability to easily restore files. A small agent runs on your Linux or Windows based server and automates the backup process on a nightly basis. Unlike tar/gzip/zip which are used for local backups the agent installed on your server has a small footprint and low resource utilization.

With viaRemote you can bypass the overall local backups and utilize the agent to do full server backups. Once the backups are initiated Arsenal Digital has a team dedicated to monitoring and reporting to our support engineers any problems that might occur during the nightly backup process.

Pricing for viaRemote is slightly different and deserves a mention here. Instead of charging you for “stored gigabytes” we use a model called “protected gigabytes”. What this means is that if you have 5GB of data on your server that needs protection you pay a monthly fee for 5GB of protected storage. In previous models, including our NAS based backups the fee was associated with how much storage space was needed. In a 7 Day scenario using NAS based storage you would have needed about 2.5 times the storage and your 5GB of data would have required you to purchase 12.50GB of storage. In larger backup scenarios the NAS Based backups could result in higher fees.

For those customers running cPanel, Plesk, HELM as a control panel there are some real advantages when using viaRemote as your backup of choice.

viaRemote vs. Built in Control Backups (cPanel/Plesk)

1.) viaRemote uses very little resources compared to PSADUMP and cPanel’s built in backup tools. Anyone that has a significant amount of backups taking place on cPanel/Plesk will appreciate this!

2.) Restores can be done a file level basis instead of an account level basis using viaRemote. cPanel/Plesk require you to do full restores of the account or untar the file to a temporary location for file retrieval.

3.) Full server restores can be accomplished on both cPanel and Plesk using viaRemote.

4.) Secure off server storage will protect your data in the event your server is compromised.

5.) Backups are monitored 24×7 by a full team and errors in backups are automatically resolved.

6.) Backups are pushed through a dedicated private network for fast backups/restores.

For organizations that need to protect data viaRemote is a great solution. These enterprise level backups provide security, ease of use, and reduced overhead on dedicated servers. Pricing for this services starts at around $25.00 per month for 5GB of protected storage.
