Back in the day when Elvis could enter the building without turning sideways, coating himself with WD40 and wriggling in, there was a saying, “500,000,000 Elvis fans can’t be wrong” (based on disputable record sales). Totally valid or not, it’s hard to argue with those types of numbers. The big “E” has sold a ton of vinyl, tape, and digital media…and still does…from that Heartbreak Hotel in the sky (or spaceship or secret room on the top floor of Graceland if you believe the conspiracy theories.)

I have been using Microsoft Exchange for about 4 years now. Prior to my forced migration a series of protocols including POP3 and IMAP controlled my life. These protocols where my communication method with the world and at the time did exactly what they were supposed to, send and receive email. It was not until my forced migration to Microsoft Exchange that I realized how one product could organize my daily activities and help me move to the next level. If you asked me today to go back to “standard” email I would be extremely disappointed if not angry!<

It’s an amazing thought that there are companies out there that do nothing but own knowledge, and they make a good living doing it. They are called Intellectual Property (IP) owners. IP owners are not new businesses, but the thought of owning intellectual property does make you wonder. If a company can sustain itself just from licensing an “idea” held within a patent or other copyrighted work, what are you doing with your IP?

Microsoft has announced an updated pricing model for our Service Provider License Agreement (SPLA). The SPLA provides us the means to legally offer managed dedicated server providers a monthly rental fee for a majority of the products Microsoft has to offer.

Microsoft Licensing is often confusing and complex. The various license options include VLK, Open License, SPLA, End User Licenses, OEM, and many others I don’t know off the top of my head. FastServers.Net partiicipates in the Service Provider License Agreement (SPLA) program and I thought I would take a few minutes to discuss how this works and some various options that are avaialble to you.
