Movable Type Upgrades, Add-Ons and Solutions

Aaron Phillips

Over the last three months I have been working with Mihai Bocsaru, Chief Web Developer of PRO IT Service (http://www.pro-it-service.com/), gradually implementing new features and improvements on the FastServers.Net BLOG. So far it has been a huge success for helping us communicate with our visitors, customers, and industry partners.

I personally get excited when I have a chance to work with great developers and professional teams. I would like to extend my thanks to Mihai Bocsaru and his team by sharing a recent interview I conducted with this guru.

1. What types of services does your organization provide?

A: PRO IT Service offers a broad range of services to the Internet industry including website surveys, development, content management, blog integration and feature enhancements, search engine optimization, search engine marketing and news publishing to help customers gain exposure to their target audiences. We are also offering News Mastering and Syndication services which allows customers to stay in touch with world wide news on certain topics (selections of keywords, key phrases etc.).

2. How have you helped FastServers.Net with Movable Type modifications?

A: We have improved FastServer.Net's Blog by optimizing the Movable Type templates, keeping the software up-to-date, and optimizing the blog for search engines. I consistently monitor the blog's performance and search engine indexing to make sure FastServers.Net reaches their potential in attracting visitors.

3. What is the importance of optimizing BLOGS for Search Engines?

A: According to Technorati, the blogosphere doubled from 34.5 million weblogs to 70 million weblogs from March 2006 to March 2007. That means 1.4 blogs were created every second over a twelve month period. To be able to compete with 70 million other blogs online, you have to make sure both your website and your blog are completely optimized for search engines. Part of the process includes some advanced search engine optimization techniques such as finding consistent keyword richness and using it for your own good.

4. What is a common configuration error you see on blogs in regards to search engine optimization?

A: The most common configuration error I see is in the actual blog source code. Typically blog coders ignore the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) programming language specifications, specifically table-less layouts and search engine friendly principles.

5. If you were to provide one tip for blog owners on how to increase exposure on their blogs, what would it be?

A: There are many factors involved that influence blog exposure. In addition to making the blog search engine friendly and offering a broad selection of extra features that keep readers entertained, I would strongly advise pinging a broad list of pinging services and continuously work on your search engine marketing campaign. To learn more about pinging services, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ping_blog.

PRO IT Service is available to help customers increase their blog exposure. Anybody interested should just email them at: info@pro-it-service.com or contact them from their Web site: http://www.pro-it-service.com/

6. What is Blog Syndication and how can blog owners use it to their advantage?

A: According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_syndication), "Web syndication is a form of syndication in which a section of a website is made available for other sites to use. This could be simply by licensing the content so that other people can use it; however, in general, web syndication refers to making web feeds available from a site in order to provide other people with a summary of the Web site's recently added content (for example, the latest news or forum posts)."

Basically Blog Syndication means offering your blog's content or latest "X" items, entirely or in part, to other people to read on their news aggregators or for publishing on their websites with a link back to you for the full story using RSS Feeds. This is an excellent marketing technique. Your audience can subscribe to your RSS Feeds and be automatically alerted any time you publish new content to your blog. And other websites can display an excerpt of your latest blog posts. Doing so creates incoming links to your website that will help with your search engine positioning, as well as increase the number of direct targeted visitors.

7. Why is it important to keep blog software like Movable Type updated?

A: Security is the number one reason for keeping your Movable Type blog software updated. By updating your software, you automatically receive the latest in security fixes and patches. You also get the latest features and improvements. Doing so gives your readers a better overall blogging experience.

Movable Type Upgrade

8. How do organizations use BLOGS to advance their marketing and customer communications?

A: Organizations use blogs to communicate their marketing and messages to current and potential customers. Rather than posting your marketing message on your main website, you can build a blog and establish an audience and keep them entertained with things they are interested in. Also, try not to always make it about your marketing message or sales pitch. Give readers information they want to know.

That wraps up our interview. Speaking from experience, implementing a blog on your website and following the advice of Internet gurus like Mihai Bocsaru, you too can find success with your own blog.

Aimed by the goal of helping people around the blogosphere discover the new Movable Type 4.0 beta insides without spending time on getting this platform installed on their side, Mihai Bocsaru has setup a free demo of the latest Movable Type v4.0 software release at http://www.movabletype4.org/ on the very first day Six Apart launched this beta release.

The Future of URCHIN Analytics

Aaron Phillips

Recently I interviewed Urchin’s co-founder, Scott Crosby. Google acquired Urchin back in November, 2005. Since then Crosby has been leading the development and business objectives for the Urchin program at Google as Enterprise Business Development Manager. We discussed the future of the product and compared it to Google’s own free website traffic analytics program, aptly named Google Analytics.

First I wanted to know if Google has a roadmap planned for the continued development of Urchin. According to Crosby, Google does have a roadmap, but it’s specifically for internal use only. However, he was happy to give me some highlights on the next version of Urchin. Based on the feedback I received, Urchin still has a future and with it comes several new features.

Currently Urchin does not offer “direct” integration with your website. Instead, it sucks up your log files, crunches the data, and spits out useful reports. Next I wanted to know if there are plans to implement ad tracking capabilities. Crosby said the next version’s ad tracking feature will be similar to the paid add-on that’s available now called the Campaign Tracking Module, but will be included at no extra charge. “This feature allows you to track campaigns from search engines, email campaigns, email or web based newsletters, and much more. It does require a bit of extra work because you have to tag your URLs for it to show up in your log files. Regardless, it will be worth the extra effort.”

As you know, Google Analytics is free to anyone with a Google account. Google provides the server space and regularly updates the software, whereas Urchin requires a purchased license fee and the website owner must provide the server, hardware, and bandwidth. Licensing fees for Urchin start at $5,000 available through preferred vendors. You can’t get the software directly from Google.

Google offers partners like FastServers.Net Hosted Urchin licenses on a monthly rental basis instead of purchasing them upfront. Allowing vendors the ability to rent licenses monthly provides greater flexibility and savings for website owners wanting to install and run Urchin. Currently there are no plans to change Urchin’s name. However, according to Crosby, the name may remain the same or it may be called Google Analytics Installable or something similar.

All features currently available in Google Analytics will be available in the next version of Urchin, but without some AdWords integration. Software-only reports such as status and error codes, robots and spiders reports, and non-html file type reports will be included at no additional charge. I asked Crosby if AJAX, or movable objects on a web based application, will be used in the next version. As of today, the roadmap does not call for AJAX, but as the development cycle continues, Google may decide to implement the code for enhanced usability. For those of you not familiar with AJAX, login to your Google Analytics account, click and hold any of the modules on the dashboard, and move them around accordingly. Make sure you are viewing the new interface as the old interface does not utilize AJAX.

Crosby said Urchin is better suited for website owners who want to keep their information private. “Many companies do not want Google to receive and store confidential web traffic information even in anonymous form. They prefer software they can install and control on their own,” said Crosby. He also told me that nearly all government, financial, and many non-US entities will only use Urchin software for this reason. In fact, those entities represent 50% of Urchin’s market share.

To sum up, if you want the added privacy and complete control over your data, pay the license fee for Urchin. And you can customize your website statistics information to fit your organization’s specific requirements. Or you can leave it up to Google Analytics to keep track of your website traffic, data, and reports at no charge to you.

Flipping the Switch with Tom Green

Aaron Phillips

Flipping the Switch with Tom Green

Online videos are a popular communication medium on the Internet right now. Companies publishing video content such as YouTube, Google Video, and Video.AOL.com, have all taken technology to the next level by integrating with Social Media websites as part of the Web 2.0 generation. Increasing daily are requests for Social Media based hosting servers specifically used for video streaming, niche MySpace replicas, and various other methods for people to communicate with each other. All of these concepts are part of the Web 2.0 sensation where “ease of use” and overall content are becoming part of the Internet as we know it.

As Social Media websites that utilize live video and streaming media gain popularity, they must utilize the power and speed of dedicated server hardware in order to maintain the amount of traffic and bandwidth they receive on a daily basis. Turning to a solution provider like FastServers.Net will help Social Media and video driven websites maintain their online presence. Social Media Web Hosting might even become an industry of its own, or at least a service offered by major dedicated hosting server providers.

FastServers.Net has been providing a dedicated server solution to The Tom Green Show, an online talk show with host Tom Green. Tom’s website is becoming more and more popular each day with thousands of visitors and video downloads taking place when the show airs (M-F 11PM EST). As a result of the show’s extraordinary popularity, the influx of increased traffic put a strain on their current dedicated server’s memory and caused the server to shut down during last night’s show. After the show, around 1AM, their technical engineer (Bill Snitzer) requested we double the RAM in their current server to keep the incident from recurring. In about ninety minutes or less, our team of hardware engineers added the new RAM and had the server back online and running!

Concerned that RAM might not be the single cause of bottlenecks in the server, Bill and Tom called our Sales Engineers to discuss alternative solutions. After a long chat on the phone, we all agreed the next best move would be to upgrade their current server to a new Dell PowerEdge 2850 with 4GB of RAM and SCSI Drives! With all this power and speed, The Tom Green Show is set to achieve even greater numbers in terms of traffic and video downloads. When it comes to growth, Tom clearly understands the philosophy behind building an online presence: “You have to build it for the potential growth.”

The following video shows Tom talking to Bill about their server running out of memory and how they need to address the issue.

By working with FastServers.Net, the staff at The Tom Green Show can focus less on technology and more on producing interesting material for the world to view. Tapping into FastServers.Net’s inventory, 24x7 staffing, and fast deployment procedures, The Tom Green Show can quickly scale from a single server, single processor solution to a multi-server, multi-processor solution in a matter of hours instead of weeks! Also, Tom sent us a personalized video testimonial. If you haven’t seen the video yet, head on over to our new customer video testimonial page or view it below!

Eight Testimonials that Validate Managed Hosting

Aaron Phillips

In December we started a project asking a few of our customer if they would be interested in doing a video testimonial. It was met with great success! If you would have asked me to predict the outcome, I would have told you that maybe 2-3 videos would be online in a couple of weeks. What actually took place was an overwhelming response from 8 very different organizations and a lot of really good web development to make this project a reality.

We reached out to a number of our valued customers and asked if they would be willing to participate. Each video is very different in nature. When we spoke with the organizations that did the videos, they all said the same thing - it was time consuming. I understand that… Personally, I have to record my voice mail 3-5 times just to get it right, so I imagine these 1 to 3 minute videos would be a much more complex process.

The development and production of these videos also took a little longer because we wanted to make sure they were cross-compatible and, of course, capture your attention. For this reason we used a light box effect and converted them into flash. Our designers and video production firm spent a great deal of time working out the bugs, testing on multiple platforms, and getting the final result to where it is today.

For years we have published customer testimonials in a text based format which seems to be a popular trend in the industry, but we really wanted to provide both existing and new customers the opportunity to visually hear and see how passionate our customers are about our service.

The videos are quite varied, but all are raw footage from customers from start to finish. You will see some standing up and turning off the camera, reading from a piece of paper, and even some very nicely produced professional video clips from companies such as n-tara and SPARQTRAINING.

In the recent months our entire team has been focused on publishing new material to the website including updates to the staff profiles and customer video testimonials. The next phase of this project will be the update of staff profiles that include video clips and interviews!

More videos are currently in the works as we are looking to grow our collection. If you would like to be featured as a customer, we have a traveling digital video camera we can send out. You can use it to record your testimonial and share with the world your satisfaction with FastServers.Net! Email me for more details!

During the final stages of this project I found a video that didn’t make it to final production but provided a rock solid USP (Unique Selling Point). I wanted to make sure this was made available and wanted to share with you a great marketing message, a passionate customer, and one of my favorite submitted videos!

To view the video visit the Customer Video Testimonial section of the website!

FireFox, Google, BLOGS, and RSS Readers

Aaron Phillips

New technology – who needs it? Well, if you read my story, you too may want to utilize the latest in technology using Firefox, Google, BLOGS, and RSS Readers. I am a hard sell when it comes to using new technology. I don’t want it to complicate my life. And I certainly don’t want to spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to use the fancy features and nifty gadgets. Don’t get me wrong, I still like to install, configure, and play with new software as it becomes available. But for the most part, it is quickly removed and erased from my thoughts, just as quickly as it was downloaded and installed on my computer. So where am I going with this?

Lately I have been spending more and more time visiting BLOGS – reading, engaging, and participating in the overall culture of “bloggers” and “blogging.” I frequent a number of hosting industry based web sites to keep me informed on what is happening in the industry. I’m sure a lot of you reading this have visited a BLOG or two, but are you familiar with RSS Readers? I have been aware of RSS Readers, what they do, and the technology behind them, but I have also been really stubborn to actually sit down and start using one. New software and technology that doesn't save time, simplify procedures, or save money, just don’t make it into my daily life.

Over the weekend I probably drank around 5-6 cups of coffee while running through bookmarks and looking at some of my favorite marketing related BLOGS. It has been a process I try and do at least once a week so I don't fall behind with the latest news, gossip, and opinions of my peers.

While browsing one of the sites (http://www.fastservers.net/blog/), yes, it’s true, I frequent our own BLOGS, I accidentally clicked on the “Add to Google” icon. And that’s just because I am naturally drawn to anything that’s Google. It turns out that I ended up signed into my Google Reader account. Next thing I know, I’m subscribing to the FastServers.Net BLOG I was visiting. I thought, wow this is neat! I can go out to all my favorite web logs and news sites and instantly subscribe to BLOGS that interest me instead of searching through my massive list of bookmarks. And by massive, I mean several dozen or more. All I have to do is simply login to my Google Reader account and voilà, I have instant access to all the news and information I could ever want! It’s that simple.

After I finished mass subscribing myself to 20-30 news sites, BLOGS, and other RSS based content, I thought - "It would be neat if I could be notified of any new postings and changes." With a little research, and a another cup of coffee, I found a nice little Firefox plug-in called the Google Reader Notifier Firefox Extension (good name choice, btw). I instantly downloaded and installed the plug-in. Using Firefox is so easy. Anyway, on with the story.

This morning during my normal regimen, and with coffee in hand (yes, I love coffee), I began answering emails, opening browsers (six or so), and preparing for the day. To my surprise, Firefox alerted me of 10 new posts that were brand new! With just a few clicks I was able to review those 10 new posts, visit a couple of interesting ones, and marked the remaining ones accordingly. What I have come to appreciate are those sites that utilize RSS Feeds to do mass updates. A few of the sites I subscribed to have been doing updates every 10 minutes! The best part is I get those updates immediately. Now that’s impressive! And all it took was a little bit of new technology, powered by Google Reader, and the Firefox plug-in.

If you are an avid news junkie, BLOG reader, or simply want to centralize your overall updates, getting Google Reader plus the Google Reader Notifier Firefox Extension, can help you save time and maybe even simplify your browsing experience. If you are a FastServers.Net customer, subscribing to our forum via any of the newsreaders is only one click away. Just look to your left and you will see a list of possibilities including both standard ATOM and RSS capabilities. And don’t forget, you will also see the “Add to Google” icon I mentioned earlier. Happy reading!

HostingCon 2007 - The Chicago Think Tank

Aaron Phillips

Something incredible took place at the W Hotel (www.whotel.com) on Tuesday, February 20, in downtown Chicago. A group of some of the most creative and inspiring minds in the hosting industry collected for a day to discuss the upcoming HostingCon 2007 event. Prominent leaders in the hosting industry shared their opinions and feedback on how to make this an event everyone will be talking about long after it’s over.

The goal of the meeting was to come up with a plan to make this happen successfully. Did come up with a plan? Absolutely. You are probably wondering who the group was at the meeting. It was the HostingCon Advisory Board.

As a member of the HostingCon Advisory Board, I had the opportunity to talk in-depth with enthusiastic people who share the same goal as me – how can we make HostingCon 2007 the best event the hosting industry has ever experienced. We did succeed in coming up with a plan.

Before I give you some ideas on how you can become a significant part of HostingCon 2007, let me introduce you to the key players on the HostingCon Advisory Board:

1. Microsoft - A second Platinum Sponsor, was represented by Leen Kashyap and Michael van Dijken. To my surprise, and everyone else in the room, Leen and Michael did not have on any swag, which was how we thought we could identify them on the first night. They did, however, admit they were not big fans of the Microsoft wardrobe.

They were greeted by a group of people talking about their love and usefulness for Microsoft Exchange Server, which they admitted was an odd experience for them. Leen openly admitted he liked the group right away because we boosted egos and discussed how we all use Microsoft Exchange in our daily lives.

Under normal circumstances, Microsoft employees seem to get abused for any and all problems caused by every piece of software Microsoft has ever developed and deployed. I did have some complaints about Windows 3.1 (jokingly), but I held off so they could enjoy all of the praise that took place.

2. TechPadAgency - The famous Derek Vaughan and Ben Fisher attended the meeting. I happened to score my second TechPadAgency memorabilia, personally signed (You Still Rock) by my hero in the web hosting news industry, Derek. If you want to stay on top of the hosting industry and marketing related news, I would highly suggest getting daily updates directly from Derek. You can signup by going to The Hosting News Website

These guys really brought a lot of great ideas and energy to the room. They even coined the term "Smackdown," although I know I’ve heard that somewhere else, that was then used about 90 times throughout the day. Ben Fisher, very enthusiastic about the marketing side of things, provided some incredible ideas you will see in July!

3. Isabel Wang – A popular hosting industry blogger from www.isabelwang.com, was the third hosting guru I had the opportunity to spend time with and share ideas. Not only did she bring years of experience, ideas, and opinions to the table, you can also get the "unreported" hosting industry news from Isabel. She knows who's doing what these days, which is very important to those of us in the marketing arena.

Her daily interaction with technology, blogging, and industry news provided great ideas for keynote speakers, sessions, and she gave some insightful direction for the Advisory Board. I did learn there is no such thing as small talk with Isabel, as my prior night’s conversation landed FastServers.Net on her Blog the following day. I can spread the rumor that she passed up desert, wears a long North Face coat, and engages in very interesting conversations about the industry. Unfortunately, I was not able to gain any kind of leverage for good blogging material. Maybe next time Isabel!

4. George Roberts, Frank Spaulding, and Sue Church - Represented the official HostingCon team and led the discussions of the day. The agenda, planning, and execution of the event made it one of the most successful Advisory Boards meetings to date. And throughout the day, they really listened to the ideas being shared in the room, participated in the brainstorming process, and provided a meeting that was fast-pasted and chocked full of great content.

It was admitted that as a group, we could probably sit in a room for one week straight talking about various hosting related topics. But since we only had eight hours to get everything in, these leaders made sure that only the most important topics were covered.

Tips For HostingCon 2007

While I am not at liberty to discuss the content of the meeting, what I can provide are a few tips to help make this show the best yet.

1. Press Release - If you are a vendor or thinking about becoming a vendor, have a professional press release written and published the minute you sign up! It's important for your company to utilize the benefits a press release can offer in order to get the word out that you will be attending as a sponsor. If you need help writing your press release, contact me directly (ap@fastservers.net) or contact Ben Fisher from TechPadAgency. One of us will make sure you are in direct contact with professional copywriters who can help you get your press release ready and published.

2. Sign up Early!
- I cannot stress this enough. HostingCon will be mailing passes out. Early registration helps them gauge attendance, allocate resources, and put on a better show.

3. Provide feedback during the show. - It's not hard to find George, Frank, or Sue during HostingCon. They really do a great job in listening to your opinions, feedback, and questions. Their goal is to continue developing events that will have an impact on the hosting industry. If surveys are available during the show, please take a few minutes to fill them out. Surveys lead to great things and the information will be used to make HostingCon 2008 even better than HostingCon 2007. During the show you can also catch one of the members of the Advisory Board and provide discuss your opinions on the event. The Advisory Board will be meeting towards the end of the show to discuss topics, opinions, and planning for HostingCon 2008. Make sure you provide feedback!

4. Help create the buzz. - For those of you that have Blogs, or are part of the Hosting Media world, start spreading the word. You can also get in contact with George Roberts and let him know you are interested in a Press Pass. Then you can attend the event and give us your spin on what’s taking place.

To Sum It Up

This week provided a great outlet for meeting some of the greatest minds in the Web Hosting Industry and having the unique opportunity to provide ideas and feedback for the upcoming HostingCon 2007. The people that joined the ranks of this Advisory Board flew in from all around the US, spent their valuable time locked in a board room, and produced a list of fantastic ideas and topics you can look forward to in July. As I end my trip and start the checkout process at the "W," I want to thank everyone that made the trip and gave me the wonderful opportunity to talk marketing, hosting, servers, and technology for three days straight. I look forward to HostingCon 2007!

FastServers Participates in TechNexus Open House

Mark Luptek

FastServers was recently given the opportunity to exhibit our company's capabilities at the grand opening of the Illinois Technology Association's (ITA) new "TechNexus" Facility in Chicago. During this event, over 375 people came to see the new facility and learn more about Illinois based tech firms.

What is the ITA, you ask? Well, the ITA serves members in Chicagoland and throughout the State and exists to help grow the number of successful businesses that create, deploy and utilize information technology as a core part of their organization.

What is the TechNexus, you ask? Another superb question. TechNexus a multipurpose “clubhouse” for the Illinois technology community that includes:

- A Technology Conference Center providing round tables and events from 2-120 people
- Meeting Space and video conferencing for use by technology companies
- Space for 10 “Companies-in-Residence”
- “Hoteling space” for ITA Members who don’t have downtown office space but need the flexibility of an organized downtown presence
- An “ITA Clubhouse” where the community can come together to collaborate and build businesses

FastServers was one of over 10 companies that were able to showcase their business models and got to meet association members in an informal setting. It was a great chance for our team to learn more about what clients are doing with the technology we support.

We also will be making events like these more of the norm in the coming year. Our hope is to not only support these ventures though our participation, but to also "meet and greet" as many of our local clients as we can. So next tech event your at in Chicago, do stop by and say hello.

Honest Web Hosting Directories?

Aaron Phillips

As I received my daily listing of press releases and web hosting related news I noticed a press release for a web hosting directory with a new twist.

The summary said, “Independent provider of objective performance metrics company, RealMetrics, has added a technical support response time metric to its web hosting reports, including uptime, web speed, CPU speed, and disk speed. “

The Website: http://www.realmetrics.com

I decided it was worth checking out and what I found was pretty surprising. First they offered a nice ad-free site which featured Shared Hosting Providers + VPS Hosting Providers. In reading further they actually sign up for accounts, test out speeds, CPU, support and much more. My first thought was the data had more to do with some sort of affiliate scheme and less to do with reality. They provide nice graphs and I was soon convinced this data could be real. I filled out their contact form and 2 hours later I had someone on the phone to discuss how their system work.

They indeed gather a lot of data from shared and VPS hosting providers and the talk I had revealed they know what they are doing! In speaking with them they had a great insight on the hosting industry and gaining true metrics.

We of course talked about a “dedicated server” section on their website and I am anticipating being one of the first companies to sign off. Unlike many other web hosting directories the position you gain with RealMetrics has more to do with actual performance and less to do with your ad spend.

The service isn’t free and they are reimbursed for their hosting fees, but the concept has me interested. Just imagine a web hosting directory that ranks you based on the quality of your service, network, and support. I am aware of only one other web hosting directory that has this same philosophy and they deserve a mention. Web Host Magazine (www.webhostmagazine.com) has been reviewing web hosting providers, read about their guarantee via http://www.webhostmagazine.com/OurGuarantee.asp

Don’t get me wrong I don’t knock paid rankings, but I also respect the possibility of getting a A+ without having to pay the teacher !
